Frequently Asked House Insurance Questions
What is house insurance?
Purchasing a home represents one of the most significant investments most people will make. Protecting that investment is extremely important; a homeowners insurance policy is the vehicle to do just that.
A natural disaster can cause damages in thousands if not 10s of thousands of dollars. Unfortunately, most individuals cannot afford to pay out-of-pocket repairs of that magnitude. With a homeowners insurance policy, homeowners can reduce their out-of-pocket post-disaster expenses to that of a predetermined deductible they are comfortable with.
What does house insurance cover?
Structure
A house insurance policy pays to repair or rebuild your home if damaged by a hurricane, hail, fire, lightning, or other disaster named in your homeowner's insurance policy. If you have a detached structure, such as a garage, shop, shed, or gazebo, you will want to include it when obtaining your house insurance quote. When deciding on coverage for your home's structure, it is recommended to purchase enough insurance coverage to rebuild your home in the event of a disaster.
* A standard policy does not cover (pay) for damage from a flood (rising water), earthquake, or normal wear and tear. To ensure coverage from rising water, you will need to add a flood insurance policy.
Contents (personal belongings)
Everything you place inside of your home that is not fixed to the structure is considered contents. Household furniture, clothing, fitness equipment, home computers, and other personal items are covered by your insurance if damaged by a hurricane, fire, or stolen from your property. Contents coverage of your homeowner's insurance policy usually represents a percentage of your insurance policy limit (around 50 to 70 percent of the insurance you carry on the house's structure). If you have personal items that exceed the value of your home, you should consider adding an endorsement to your policy to cover the cost of replacing those items. The safest way to ensure you have enough homeowners insurance coverage is to create a home inventory.
Contents (Personal belongings) coverage includes items stored or taken off-premises, which means your possessions are covered wherever you take them. Many companies limit the amount of off-premises coverage to a percentage of your contents insurance limit, usually around 10 percent.
Suppose you own expensive artwork, rugs, collectibles, furs, silverware, or jewelry (wedding rings, Rolex watch, etc.). In that case, a homeowners insurance policy will have a limit (or cap) on reimbursement of these items if stolen or damaged. To ensure your expensive items are covered, you will want to take out an endorsement or floater policy for them at their officially appraised value.
Landscaping, such as plants, trees, and shrubs, are also covered under a standard homeowners insurance policy, usually about $500 per item. However, plants and trees are not covered for lack of maintenance or disease.
Liability protection
Your homeowner's liability will protect you against lawsuits for bodily injury or property damage you or your household family members could cause to other people. It can also pay for damage your pets may cause. In addition, your homeowner's liability can pay for the cost of defending you in court, and if found guilty, the dollar amount the court awards - up to your policy limit.
Liability limits start around $100,000; if your family has considerable financial assets, you should consider increasing your liability limit to a higher level of protection. Ask one of our team members about the benefits of an umbrella policy, also known as an excess liability policy (it can provide broader coverage with increased liability limits).
Your house insurance policy also provides no-fault medical coverage if someone is injured in your home.
They simply submit the medical bills to the insurance provider to be repaid. Your household family and pets are excluded from this benefit, it is only for guest of your home.
Additional living expenses (ALE)
Your homeowner's insurance policy may also include additional living expenses; this benefit varies from one provider to another. ALE reimburses you for the cost of living away from home if a covered disaster damage to your home prevents you from residing in it. ALE can cover an insureds hotel or temporary housing cost, meals and other expenses that go above usual living expenses incurred while your home is being repaired. ALE can also cover the rent you would have collected from a roommate or tenant if your home had not been damaged.
